Indulging in Home Spa Delights

spaA luxury trend at home in recent years has been to expand the bathroom to create a personal oasis, shutting out the pressures of the day. Even the thought of the luxury and solitude of a warm bath is something that instantly brings most people’s stress level down a peg or two.

Manufacturers of bath products in North America are very aware of consumers’ desire to relax, renew and rejuvenate, and the latest offerings will do just that. From ultra-modern to Victorian era designs, there is something for everyone, and every budget.

While the majority of bathtubs today are made with fiberglass, one company takes a different, natural path with its limestone blend base. This eco-friendly, sustainable bath solution combines innovation with design in roll-edge tub. Its volcanic limestone and high-performance resins produces a durable, hardwearing surface that contains special insulating properties to maintain a steady water temperature for a prolonged period. The traditional cast iron tub is not only much heavier, but must first absorb heat before it can contain it.

Chromatherapy lighting has been a popular addition to home spa designs over the past few years. Each of the seven colors of the spectrum brings a sense of composure and equilibrium including: Red – Energizing; Orange – Stimulating; Violet – Enlightening; Yellow – Clarifying; Green – Calming; Purple – Stimulating; and Blue – Detoxifying. LED lighting systems with chromatherapy tubs offer the option of one solid color, or the full spectrum rotating while you enjoy the relaxing comforts of the deep water. Studies have shown that regular exposure, in twenty-minute sessions, has many therapeutic effects on people physically and psychologically.

Granite Rocks Kitchen

Posted by admin | Home Improvement, Tips | Sunday 25 October 2009 4:16 am

Most lumps of granite feel much more at home pointing upwards into the sky than flattened under a rolling pin in your kitchen! For this reason, granite counter tops need some understanding and care as they are made from a natural product, which is being used ‘out of context’ so as to speak

Granite counter tops can be very expensive, but as they can last a lifetime, they may work out to be a bargain price if you are sure that you are settled into your ‘dream’ home.

One of the reasons that granite is so expensive is because it is not a man-made material and it is heavy to transport and may even break during the process. Apart from its difficulty in maneuvering, it also needs expertise in cutting, fitting and handling. Because this is not a do-it-yourself option it costs more to install than regular counter tops.

granite_rockHowever, being ‘rock’ it is tough and may withstand more of a beating than your average counter top. For instance chips and scratches can be repaired and you can stand hot pots on it with no problem.

Chips and scratches can be re-finished by an expert; scratches can be sanded and buffed away and even deep chips can be repaired. A specific technique is used whereby the chip is encircled and lifted out by drilling a complete circle around it. A circle of granite the same size and color is then dropped into the drilled out hole.

It is probably harder to get a chip than to repair it! Granite is very chip resistant and can be bashed around quite a bit without damage!

However, be warned there are two areas where granite can you let you down: cracking and staining; with awareness, both can be avoided. Cracking will be avoided by employing a builder who knows how much support each span of granite needs. (The other less likely cause of cracking could be the settlement of a new house.)

Granite is a natural rock that was not originally designed (!) for use in a kitchen and it can be porous. For this reason granite must be sealed and periodically re-sealed to maintain its function and looks. In most other aspects of care, it is a very forgiving material which can be repaired by the experts to keep its new looks for ever.

If used inadequately sealed, it can be spoiled by an acidic or an oily substance being spilled on it. Granite must be sealed on installation and each year thereafter (some say one to two years, but why take a chance?). Looked after properly and treated as the living thing that it is, granite will give you a lifetime of wear and become value for money.

Las Vegas: A great place to retire

Posted by admin | Home Living | Thursday 15 October 2009 4:07 am

lake-las-vegasI live in a small single family home in one of the beach areas in Southern California. And have spent the last few years witnessing my home appreciate in value at a level that is unbelievable. I have a thirty-year mortgage on my home that will be paid off in another 10 years. My current payments are $1435.00 plus $ 600 in property taxes each month. Ten years ago I would have never believed that this type of appreciation would be possible. And other than a slight “adjustment in the market” There seems no end to it. In studying comparative sales in neighborhoods close to me, it looks like I have about $300,000.00 in equity. This is Unbelievable, and gives me retirement opportunities beyond my wildest dreams.

So now I am in a quandary on whether to sell my 20 years old home or remain where I am and refinance. So I am exploring the following options:
Refinance and remodel or upgrade my home and pay off the pesky credit card and car loans.
Refinance and with the proceeds invest in another piece of property, in such hot markets as the Green Valley area of Las Vegas. Rent the property and then I can have the tax benefits of a rental property.
Sell this property and move to a beautiful new home in the Las Vegas area. I can purchase a home in Nevada and live mortgage free.

As I explore all my options I am beginning to believe think that the smartest thing I could do is purchase a new home in Lake Las Vegas.

Solar Power for Your House

Posted by admin | Home Living, Tips | Wednesday 14 October 2009 11:31 pm

solar-panelThe benefits of solar power: reduced energy bills, less demand on already stressed city power grids, it’s a form of renewable energy. Solar power seems so, well, perfect—if only I knew it were right for my house. Then I’d get on it right away. I would, really!

Well, this let’s-put-it-off excuse is no longer valid thanks to website Roofray. Using Google satellite data and information provided by the National Renewable Energy Labs, Roofray allows you to determine what type of solar-based system is optimal for your home before slapping down money on an actual system.

It’s pretty simple: enter your address and up pops a satellite image of your home’s rooftop. Next, using the Roofray tool, draw solar arrays and slope and, voilà—power per square foot and total peak power come up, in chart form, along with more metrics including projected performance, financial analysis, average monthly utility bill (after solar is added), total cost summary and—key, really—estimated time until the solar array is paid off.

Of course, these are all estimates, so take your calculations in stride. Also, don’t just try one size; play around with different-sized arrays and placement. Then, take what you’ve discovered, talk to some experts in your area and start earning cash – and helping conserve resources – thanks to that brilliant ball in the sky.

Bathroom Perks

Posted by admin | Home Improvement | Saturday 10 October 2009 5:25 am

Your bathroom has modern fixtures, attractive counter and cupboards, and a pleasing color scheme, but somehow it still feels like it is lacking something. It needs some pizzazz, some character that sets it apart from the average bath. Often times, a little imagination and elbow grease is all you need to turn a bathroom from “ho hum” to “wow!”

news_Bathroom-PerksExamine your walls – is there room for improvement? Here are some ideas to get you thinking beyond that plain painted surface.

Update your ceramic tile backsplash using eye catching glass tiles. They’re available in a myriad of funky colors go a long way to livening up a room.

Cover a section or small wall with tempered glass notice boards from IKEA. Once you’ve painted the wall, install these clear, frosted panels with anchors and screw holders included with boards.

Create a theme using attractive art work. For memories of summer vacation at the beach, have those scenery pictures framed using a 3D box frame and add a sprinkling of sand and some shells at the bottom. Have some surfing shots blown up, framed and matted for eye-catching wall covering.

Get rid of that old vanity and replace it with an antique dresser. Find a dresser that fits in the space and will work with the sink and faucet you’ll be using. Once you’ve made a template, use a jigsaw to cut a hole for the sink. Customize the drawers by cutting spaces to accommodate the plumbing.

A Guide how to Painting Home by yourself

Posted by admin | Home Living, Tips | Wednesday 7 October 2009 5:57 pm

paint_can_colorsPainting your home could be easy, but for those people it couldn’t. This past weekend I painted my home. It’s quite small – only 5 rooms – so, I think it would be easy. Wrong. I’m sure that as with most other people, the assumption may be that painting is a no-brainer and hey with a roller, fast too. While it isn’t rocket science, there are a few pointers that can be very helpful (which I now wish I’d had before hand) for first timers.

I start out with how to pick colours. Although I flirted with some ideas of setting a Mediterranean Island feel, in the end I went with a light cream to open up the rooms which had been previously coloured light olive, mauve, and yellow – all hideous shades.

If you’re not sure about which colours you’d like, or even where to begin, you can watch Mag Ruffman’s video tips or read the article. She basically recommends using more than an itty bitty paint chip as a reference. For further reiteration Style at Home’s article also suggests viewing your chosen hue in different lighting.

Now that you’re sure about the colour(s), what other tools do you need?

1. masking tape

2. drop cloth

3. wall brush & trim and sash brush

4. roller

5. painting paint

6. cleaning supplies
