Your bathroom has modern fixtures, attractive counter and cupboards, and a pleasing color scheme, but somehow it still feels like it is lacking something. It needs some pizzazz, some character that sets it apart from the average bath. Often times, a little imagination and elbow grease is all you need to turn a bathroom from “ho hum” to “wow!”

Examine your walls – is there room for improvement? Here are some ideas to get you thinking beyond that plain painted surface.

Update your ceramic tile backsplash using eye catching glass tiles. They’re available in a myriad of funky colors go a long way to livening up a room.

Cover a section or small wall with tempered glass notice boards from IKEA. Once you’ve painted the wall, install these clear, frosted panels with anchors and screw holders included with boards.

Create a theme using attractive art work. For memories of summer vacation at the beach, have those scenery pictures framed using a 3D box frame and add a sprinkling of sand and some shells at the bottom. Have some surfing shots blown up, framed and matted for eye-catching wall covering.

Get rid of that old vanity and replace it with an antique dresser. Find a dresser that fits in the space and will work with the sink and faucet you’ll be using. Once you’ve made a template, use a jigsaw to cut a hole for the sink. Customize the drawers by cutting spaces to accommodate the plumbing.

Incorporate storage systems such as cabinetry or shelving to hold extra towels.

Completely pamper yourself by including some of these luxury amenities in your master bath.

If you’re the type that loves a long soak in the tub, mount a flat screen TV in an upper corner of the bathroom, well away from any splashing water.

Turn that shower into a spa with a combined sauna and steam shower. Pre-cut sauna kits are commonly available for do-it-yourselfers and are not difficult to install. Your biggest requirement is a dedicated electrical circuit.

To transform your shower into a steam shower, you need a completely enclosed shower including a door that closes tightly. Install a vapor barrier in the ceiling and walls to prevent moisture from attacking the studs. Add a steam generator outside the shower to heat the water (requires 220 volt element).

Experience the toasty warmth of a heated towel by adding a towel warmer. Heat using electric or hydronic systems (hot water heating) for the ultimate in pampering.

Keep your tootsies warm by adding heated coils under your flooring. They burn very little energy and provide a comfortable surface, especially on those cold winter days.

Splurge on some upgraded hardware to make your bathroom look richer and give your cabinetry a new look.

Add a bold, colorful shower curtain with matching towels.

If you’re the type that doesn’t like to get rid of anything until it falls apart, think of another use for your old towels and buy some fresh new linen for your bath.

Replace your old sconces or fixtures with modern lighting. You’ll be surprised at the wide availability of low cost, eye-catching fixtures.
